About REAL Family Engagement

At the Flamboyan Foundation, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive and live a fulfilling life. For more than a decade, we have pursued this belief by advancing equity in education, specifically family engagement.

We have seen – and research shows – that families play five essential roles in their children’s education:

The five roles families play to accelerate student learning are: One, communicate high expectations. Two, monitor their child's performance. Three, support learning at home. Four, guide their child's education. Five, advocate for their child.

ALL families deserve access to the information and connections they need to play these roles well, and REAL Family Engagement ensures they have exactly that.

What is REAL family engagement? R stands for Relationships with teachers built on trust, ongoing communications, and shared power. E stands for Experiences where educators challenge their own biases and promote racial equity. A stands for Academic Partnerships that include student performance and social-emotional development. L stands for Leadership in schools, school systems, and communities who create the conditions for meaningful engagement.

When family engagement gets REAL, educators and families become true allies in educational excellence, schools foster a sense of belonging for everyone, and students succeed in school and beyond.

Flamboyan is championing REAL Family Engagement in schools and school systems across the country. Join us and get REAL!

The Flamboyan Foundation is guided by the belief that all children deserve the opportunity to live a fulfilling life, no matter the circumstances they were born into. With offices in Puerto Rico and Washington, DC, Flamboyan advances equity through K-3 reading, arts revitalization, and family engagement.
